Hannah Woodroofe is a doctoral candidate in Anthropology at the University of Chicago. Her research, based on fieldwork in Youngstown, Ohio, examines the new kinds of frontierism that have emerged in a context of generalized impoverishment and decay. In particular, she focuses on how the city’s left-behind landscape has become a testing ground for projects of financial extraction and resident subsistence. Woodroofe has also worked on initiatives to develop transportation, food access, and worker-controlled businesses in Youngstown.
